Explanatory Notes

Data on marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered
at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars all throughout the region and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
Information presented includes registered marriages which occurred from 2015-2019.

The region’s record of marriages for the past 5 years showed an erratic trend with the most notable change occurred in 2017 that recorded a decrease of 5.88 percent from 20,304 in 2016 to 19,111 in 2017. It is also interesting to note that from that year up to 2019, the number of marriages increased continuously. Registered marriages likewise increased by 1.69 percent in 2018 and 1.34 percent in 2019.

Total number of marriages nationwide likewise showed the same erratic trend with year 2018 having the most number of registered marriages for the five years in review. (see Table 1 in the annex portion)

Meanwhile, late registered marriages vary from year to year during the past five years. In 2015 to 2017, percentage of late registration follows the trend of the total registered marriages, that is, as the number of registered marriages goes down, percentage of late registration also goes down. On the average, about two percent of the total registered marriages in the region were registered late during the past five years. Remarkably, despite the increase in the registered marriages in 2019, decline in the number of late registered marriages was observed.
In the entire country, around 3 to 5 percent were late registered with noticeable decrease since 2015. (see Table 1 in the annex portion)

In terms of the Crude Marriage Rate, (CMR) the region recorded around five marriages per 1,000 population. This is based on the projected population of the region in 2019 at 3.62 million. At the national level, the recorded CMR was at four marriages per 1,000 population of the country projected at 108.77 million.

Across the twelve-month period, the total marriages in 2019 reveals that Cagayan Valley’s marriages were highest during the month of April with over four thousand couples solemnized or 20.49 percent of the total marriages registered during that year. Corollary, the month of April displays the highest average daily registered marriages at 135. This was followed by the month of May and February 2019 with both having more than two thousand pairs wed resulting in 86 and 95 daily registered marriages, respectively. On the other hand, the months with the lowest number of marriages were November and September 2019 with less than 30 marriages a day.

In the Philippines, more weddings were celebrated during the month of December 2019 with more than 50 thousand marriages in all and with 2,356 average daily marriages,  The 2 other months nearest to the figure of December were the months of February and May with more than 49 thousand and 48 thousand, respectively.  The lowest so far was November with 21,424 at an average of 714 marriages a day.  This was followed too close by August at 21,830 marriages with 704 marriages a day.(see Table 2 in the annex portion)

Additionally, records showed that in 2019 majority of men and women in the region marry at ages 20-29 years old.  An average of 37.7 percent or 7,434 of women married at ages 20-24 years old and 29.8 percent or 5,861 marry upon reaching ages 25-29 years old.  Among men, there were 30.6 percent or 6,026 marry at ages 20-24 years old and 36.5 percent or 7,181 of ages 25-29 years old.

In the Philippines, most marriages were at ages 25-29 years old with more men than women married at 157,599 while that of women were 156,332.  This was followed by 20-24 years old with more women wed which almost tripled the count of men of more than eighty thousand.

In 2019, the region recorded the median age at marriage for brides and grooms at 24 and 27 years old, respectively. Surprisingly, there were 201 or about 1.0 percent men and 72 women or 0.4 percent registered marriages from among the ages 60 years old and over.

Teenage weddings were also noted among women in 2019.  About 12.6 percent or 2,482 women married during teenage years and 3.3 percent or 645 for their male counterpart.
At the national level, numerous weddings of ages 25-29 were celebrated nationwide with more women involved in the ceremony at these ages. Likewise, majority of women than man marry at teenage and senior citizen years. (see Table 4 in the annex portion)

Majority of marriages in 2019 were celebrated under civil rite. These accounted to about fifty percent (9,103) of the total marriages in the region. Roman Catholic ceremony and other religious rites were noted at almost twenty seven percent each. Two of the other ceremony contributed the least, Muslim Tradition at less than one percent or 56 marriages   and Tribal Ceremony at a very minimal count of only 4.

Comparing this nationwide, the same trend was apparent with civil ceremony and Roman Catholic ceremony having the highest number of wedding celebrations in 2019 at 166,741 marriages and 156,374, respectively while Muslim Tradition with 6,048 marriages and Tribal Rites at 3,887 were evidently the lowest. (see Table 5 in the annex portion)

Across provinces in the region, there were more weddings registered in Isabela compared with any other provinces in the region with over 9 thousand weddings celebrated in 2019.  Meanwhile, record of registered marriages in the region reveals that Tuguegarao City had the most number of celebrated marriages in 2019 with 901 marriages contributing about 4.59 percent of the total marriages in the region.  The City of Ilagan is trailing behind at 855 or 4.35 percent of the total regional figure.  Completing the top five city / municipality in terms of recorded marriages in 2019 were the City of Santiago and Cauayan at 3rd and 4th spot, respectively. The municipality of Baggao and Tumauini tied at the fifth spot. Notably, all the four cities in the region were at the top 5 in terms of recorded marriages in 2019.

Nationwide, Cities in the National Capital Region dominated the Top 1 to 4 with Quezon City having the highest marriage ceremony at more than 15 thousand.  The second to fourth highest were City of Manila, Davao and Caloocan.  The City of Cebu from the south placed fifth at more than 4 thousand marriages in 2019.  .

Top one province nationwide on the total marriages was Pangasinan at 15,787 contributing 3.7 percent of the total marriages in the country.  This was followed by Batangas at 15,222 or 3.5 percent, Cebu and Cavite with contributing 3.3 percent each or more than 14 thousand marriages and Bulacan at 12,697 marriages.
